Marblehead Tour
With modest beginnings as a simple fishing village, Marblehead, now the yachting capital of Massachusetts, is also one of the most picturesque seafront towns in the state. This affluent community has an eclectic mix of old and new buildings, charming cottages and Federalist-style homes. Oceanfront properties can be found on both the mainland and Marblehead Neck.

Schools: Education is a top priority for this active year-round community. In the fall of 2002 the town proudly opened a new state of the art high school as Phase I of the Master Plan to update, renovate and improve the schools. In September 2004 Marblehead Veteran's Middle School opened to 7th and 8th graders in the newly renovated building which was formerly Marblehead High School.

The Village School, http://www.marblehead.com/schools/village/, is open to all fourth, fifth and sixth grades. The Gerry, Eveleth, Coffin, Glover and Bell School continue to serve as neighborhood elementary schools for grades K-3. For more information on Marblehead School system, please go to www.marblehead.com/schools.

The town has two private schools, Tower School and Hillel Academy, http://www.cohenhillel.org/, as well as a public Charter School, http://www.marbleheadcharter.com/, for grades 4-8. Marblehead is a member of the Vocational Regional High School http://www.mec.edu/nsths/index.htm. There are also many excellent choices for pre-K programs in town.

Shopping: Stores, boutiques, quaint art galleries, charming antique stores and over 20 restaurants can be found in the downtown and waterfront areas. The Chamber of Commerce annually organizes "The Christmas Walk". At this time, traditionally the first weekend in December, the shops and streets are beautifully decorated and shoppers can go from store to store sampling cookies and hot cider as they contemplate holiday purchases. Further information can be found on www.marbleheadchamber.org.
Recreation: Located on the ocean, there are public and private beaches. There are 6 public tennis courts at the parks and 6 more at Marblehead High School. There are many playgrounds, a town harbor, yacht clubs and winter ice skating ponds. The recreation department offers year round activities and classes, as well as summer camp programs for children. The Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA also offers many recreational programs and a summer camp located on Children's Island. (www.northshoreymca.org) Sailing programs are offered by the town or by the Pleon Yacht Club for Junior Sailors (www.pleon.org) and Marblehead Sailing Center (www.marbleheadsailing.com). There are walking/biking trails that run along the former railroad bed from Marblehead into Salem & Swampscott.
